Appointments for Arklow are handled through the Bray centre.

If you would like counselling the first step is to call the Centre. An initial appointment with a staff counsellor will be arranged for you. This appointment usually lasts between 45 minutes and 1
hour. This is not a counselling session, there is no charge, and there is no commitment to attend counselling at this stage. Initial appointments usually take place during the day. There can be a waiting list of 4 to 6 weeks for the initial appointment. Please note, clients under 16 years of age must have their custodial parent or guardian with them when they attend their initial appointment.

It is the policy of the Centre that clients over 18 must contact the Centre personally to book an initial appointment. While we are happy to answer any questions or queries family members or referrers may have, we regret we cannot take appointments from them.

The initial appointment has several purposes. Firstly, it gives the prospective client an opportunity to learn more about counselling and how it might be able to help them. On this basis they can decide whether counselling is right for them at this time. Secondly, it gives the client a chance to describe the issues they would like to address in counselling. This is important as we have counsellors working in the Centre who have different specialities and we endeavour to place clients with the most appropriate counsellor for their needs. Finally the question of a donation is addressed at the initial. We don't charge a fee. Instead the staff counsellor at the initial appointment agrees a voluntary donation based on what the client can reasonably afford. As a Centre specifically helping people on low incomes no one is ever turned away because of a lack of means. At the end of the initial the client decides whether or not to go ahead with counselling.

Following the initial appointment the client is placed on a waiting list while the staff counsellor seeks an available vacancy from an appropriate counsellor at a time convenient for the client. This may take a little time however. Once a a matching vacancy becomes available the client is contacted and is offered a regular appointment with their counsellor. Counselling usually takes place once a week for one hour. The length of time clients need to spend in counselling is discussed between the client and the counsellor. Usually clients will be asked to commit to at least 6 sessions.

While initial appointments take place during the day on-going counselling takes place up to 8:30 in the evening from Monday to Friday.
